Germany has signed two significant agreements with the World Health Organization, committing an additional €40 million to support health emergency response efforts and establishing a host agreement for the WHO's Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Centre in Berlin 1. The €40 million contribution will be allocated across three priorities: €20 million for the WHO's 2023 Health Emergencies Appeal, €10 million for the Ukraine emergency response, and €10 million for African health emergencies 1.
This latest commitment underscores Germany's substantial financial support for global health security. The country has already contributed €53.5 million to the WHO this year alone to address more than 50 active health emergencies 1. Since 2015, Germany has invested a total of €115 million in the WHO's emergency funding mechanisms 1. The Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Centre became operational in Berlin in September 2021 and will be further strengthened through this partnership 1. Additionally, Germany will host two major follow-up events in Berlin: "Breaking Barriers: Advancing an Integrated Health Agenda with an Environmental Focus" on October 12–13, and the World Health Summit 2023 on October 15–17 1.
