The World Health Organization has highlighted how social media and digital technologies became dual-edged tools during the COVID-19 pandemic, simultaneously enabling public communication and information-sharing while amplifying an "infodemic" that undermined global health response efforts.1 The organization warned that false and misleading information poses direct threats to public health and mental well-being, increases stigmatization, weakens the effectiveness of disease prevention measures, and has resulted in lower-than-expected testing and vaccination rates.1
To address this crisis, the UN Secretary-General launched the United Nations Communications Response Initiative in April 2020.1 The World Health Assembly subsequently adopted Resolution WHA73.1 in May 2020, formally recognizing the management of health misinformation as a critical component of controlling COVID-19.1 The WHO now calls on member states to develop comprehensive action plans that prioritize the promotion of science-based accurate information, combat the spread of false narratives, and engage communities in these efforts.1 Beyond governments, the organization urges media outlets, technology companies, researchers, and civil society organizations to collaborate in tackling the infodemic and safeguarding public trust in health guidance.1
