World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has named Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister of Sweden, as Special Envoy for the COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-Accelerator).1 Bildt will lead the initiative's advocacy efforts and coordinate work across multiple pillars—including vaccines, diagnostics, therapeutics, and health systems—to advance equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines, tests, and treatments.1 He succeeds previous envoys Ngozi Okonkjo-Iweala and Andrew Witty.1
The ACT-Accelerator aims to distribute at least 2 billion vaccine doses equitably to high-risk populations worldwide by the end of 2021, while its diagnostics pillar targets procurement and distribution of at least 900 million molecular and rapid antigen diagnostic tests in the same timeframe.1 Tedros stated that Bildt's appointment comes "at a time when global solidarity and access to life-saving tools are more important than ever."1 Bildt, drawing on extensive international diplomatic experience as a former Swedish Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, acknowledged the urgency: "Infections are rising in all regions of the world, the danger of vaccine nationalism is growing, and we must strengthen the entire scope of the pandemic response."1
