During the dialogue in Washington, both sides welcomed the establishment of a new pandemic financing intermediary fund and agreed to further refine the International Health Regulations, while also committing to developing new pandemic prevention tools 1. The discussions extended beyond pandemic preparedness to encompass universal health coverage, primary healthcare, equity, and the global health workforce 2. Dr. Tedros characterized the exchange as "very productive," emphasizing the importance of strengthening WHO, global health security, and pandemic agreements 2.
The United States reaffirmed its long-standing commitment as a major contributor to the organization, having invested approximately $700 million in WHO during 2020-21 2. In December 2021, the United States pledged an additional $280 million to support efforts against COVID-19, strengthen public health systems, and provide emergency assistance 2. Both parties confirmed that their next strategic dialogue would take place in late 2023 12.
