The World Health Organization, together with international partner organizations, has introduced a comprehensive global framework aimed at eradicating human rabies worldwide.1 The initiative addresses a disease that claims tens of thousands of lives annually, with one person dying from rabies every ten minutes globally.1 Asia and Africa bear the heaviest burden of the disease, with approximately 80% of rabies exposures occurring among people living in impoverished rural areas.1
The framework centers on three critical interventions: reducing the cost of human vaccines and immunoglobulins, ensuring timely post-exposure treatment for bite victims, and implementing mass canine vaccination programs.1 Currently, human rabies vaccines cost between US$40 and US$50, equivalent to forty days' wages in some affected countries, while canine vaccines cost less than US$1.1 Vaccinating 70% of the dog population could reduce human rabies cases to zero.1 Approximately 40% of rabies deaths occur in children under fifteen years old.1
The WHO and World Organization for Animal Health vaccine stockpile has already delivered over 15 million doses of canine rabies vaccine to multiple countries as of 2015.1 A global conference scheduled for December 10–11, 2015, will formally adopt the action plan to implement this framework.1
