The World Health Organization, in partnership with The World We Want, has released a special edition cover of "We Are Family," reimagined by Kim Sledge of Sister Sledge, to raise funds for the WHO Foundation.1 The initiative launched a global crowdsourced music video campaign inviting the public and celebrities, including Rita Ora, Heather Small, and Romain Grosjean, to participate.1 Public submissions were accepted through November 30, 2020, with the complete music video set for release in December 2020.1
According to Kim Sledge, the campaign aims to recognize frontline workers and essential personnel during the global health crisis.1 She stated: "From the doctors and nurses on the front lines, to the paramedics and police, from the midwives and scientists to the carers for the vulnerable, the We Are Family campaign will salute each and every one with a feeling of unity, strength and solidarity in response to the unprecedented challenges the world faces as a result of the coronavirus outbreak."1 WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the deeper significance of the project, saying: "We Are Family is more than a song. It is a call to action for collaboration and kindness."1
Revenue generated from downloads of the special edition cover will be donated to the WHO Foundation to support the organization's global health initiatives addressing the coronavirus pandemic and other health challenges.1 The track is available for download on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon Music, with additional promotion taking place on TikTok.1
