The World Health Assembly has adopted a new strategic direction for child and adolescent health aimed at reducing childhood mortality and long-term disability.1 According to the strategy, approximately 11 million children annually face threats from preventable diseases, with 10.8 million children under five dying in 2000—more than half succumbing to five preventable infectious diseases and malnutrition.1 Critically, 99 percent of these childhood deaths occur in developing countries.1
The initiative identifies seven priority action areas to address these challenges: maternal and infant health, nutrition, preventable communicable diseases, injury prevention, physical environment, adolescent health, and mental health.1 Beyond young children, the strategy recognizes that 1.4 million adolescents die annually and approximately 1.2 billion adolescents globally face health threats including HIV/AIDS, substance use, depression, suicide, and violence.1 Daily statistics underscore the scope of the crisis: 6,000 new HIV infections occur among adolescents, 250 young people die by suicide, 1,400 die from injuries, and 16,000 girls suffer sexual abuse.1
Dr. Tomris Turmen emphasized the urgency of resource mobilization, stating: "Funding for child health has declined in recent years and this must be reversed. This expression of political will must be backed by greater financial and human resources."1
