The World Health Organization announced that a previously unknown coronavirus is responsible for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).1 This breakthrough was achieved through international collaboration among 13 laboratories from 10 countries—Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, and China—over the course of three weeks.1 Dr. David Heymann stated: "Because of an extraordinary collaboration among laboratories from countries around the world, we now know with certainty what causes SARS."1
With the causative agent now confirmed, researchers can proceed to develop diagnostic tools, targeted treatments, and vaccines against the disease.1 The discovery comes amid significant loss to the medical community: Dr. Carlo Urbani, who played a crucial role in identifying the outbreak, died from the disease in Bangkok on March 29, 2003.1
