The World Health Organization has launched the "My Health, My Rights" campaign on World Health Day, April 7, calling for governments to take decisive action to ensure universal access to quality health services, education, and safe water.1 The initiative underscores the persistent gaps in global health coverage, with more than half the world's population—approximately 4.5 billion people—lacking access to essential health services as of 2021.1
The health crisis extends beyond access alone. Some 2 billion people face financial hardship due to out-of-pocket health costs, a situation that has deteriorated over the past two decades.1 To address these disparities, the WHO emphasizes that countries require additional annual investments ranging from 200 to 328 million dollars to expand primary healthcare in low- and middle-income nations, equivalent to 3.3 percent of gross domestic product.1 The organization calls for governments to enact and enforce legislation protecting health rights, eliminate discrimination, ensure transparent accountability mechanisms, and meaningfully involve communities in health decision-making.1
Progress has been documented in some regions, with 42 countries successfully improving health service coverage and financial protection for health expenses since 2000, and at least 140 nations recognizing the right to health in their national constitutions.1 WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated: "Realizing the right to health requires governments to enact and implement laws, make investments, eliminate discrimination, and be accountable to their people."1
