Dr. Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, outlined the organization's substantial humanitarian efforts in Yemen during a high-level pledging conference, emphasizing the need for significantly increased international assistance.1
Over the past five years, the WHO and its partners have responded to the world's largest cholera outbreak in Yemen while protecting over 10 million people.1 The organization and its partners support 80 percent of therapeutic nutrition feeding centers in Yemen, having saved 91 percent of children with medical complications, and provide support for 70 percent of medical consultation services across the country.1 Last week alone, the WHO and the World Food Programme airlifted over 34,000 kilograms of medicines and medical supplies through the COVID supply chain platform, including 6.5 tons of COVID-19 personal protective equipment and laboratory diagnostic materials.1 The organizations are preparing to transport an additional 7 tons of personal protective equipment and 18 tons of medicines to Yemen this week.1
Ryan described Yemen as the site of the world's most complex humanitarian operation and noted that COVID-19 has further deteriorated the situation.1 In response, the WHO plans to expand isolation centers to 59 facilities and increase response teams from over 300 to 900 personnel.1 The organization has called for substantial increases in international support for COVID-19 operations and other health interventions in Yemen.1
