Armed militants attacked two facilities housing Ebola response workers in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, resulting in four deaths and five injuries.1 The strikes targeted a communal living camp in the Biakato mining area and the Ebola response coordination office in Mangina.1 Among those killed were one member of a vaccination team, two drivers, and one police officer.1 The World Health Organization reported one staff member injured in the attacks with no fatalities among its personnel.1
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the violence threatens to undermine progress in controlling the outbreak, stating that "Ebola is receding. These attacks will give it strength again, and more people will die."1 The regional director called for an immediate halt to such attacks and urged collaboration between the Democratic Republic of the Congo government, partner organizations, and MONUSCO to protect health workers.1 The outbreak has shown signs of decline, with seven confirmed cases reported in the past week compared to a peak of 120 cases per week in April 2019.1
