The World Health Organization's Emergency Committee convened on July 31 and unanimously agreed that COVID-19 remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).1 The committee emphasized that the pandemic will persist over an extended period, necessitating sustained global response efforts to address the ongoing crisis.1
The committee issued several key recommendations to member states to guide their pandemic response strategies.1 These include accelerating the development and equitable distribution of diagnostic tools, treatments, and vaccines; strengthening public health surveillance and contact tracing systems; and maintaining essential health services despite the ongoing emergency.1 The committee also stressed the importance of continued mobilization of global and regional organizations to support pandemic control efforts.1
The Emergency Committee will reconvene within three months or at an earlier date to be determined by the WHO Director-General.1
