The World Health Organization released its Global Report on Antimalarial Drug Efficacy and Drug Resistance (2000–2010), calling on malaria-endemic countries to intensify surveillance of antimalarial drug effectiveness to detect artemisinin resistance early 1. The report, based on over 1,100 studies conducted by national malaria control programs and research institutions over the past decade, revealed that only 34 percent of malaria-endemic countries followed WHO recommendations for routine monitoring 1.
The findings documented emerging resistance concerns. In February 2009, the WHO confirmed the presence of artemisinin resistance at the Cambodia-Thailand border, with early evidence also suggesting possible artemisinin resistance at the Myanmar-Thailand border 1. Despite these developments, artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) currently maintain a cure rate exceeding 90 percent 1. The WHO cautioned that artemisinin resistance poses a risk of spreading to Africa 1. The organization plans to release the Global Plan to Combat Artemisinin Resistance in January 2011 1. Since 1973, the WHO has provided support to national malaria control programs for drug resistance monitoring 1.
