The European Commission and the World Health Organization have agreed to deepen their strategic cooperation in global health security and health architecture.1 The commitment emerged from a strategic health dialogue between Stella Kyriakides, the European Commission's Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.1
The two organizations will coordinate efforts across multiple priority areas aligned with the European Union's newly released Global Health Strategy and the European Health Union, alongside WHO's 2022-2026 strategic priorities.1 Specific areas of collaboration include pandemic agreement negotiations, amendments to the International Health Regulations, addressing cross-border health threats, and advancing digital health solutions.1 The new EU Global Health Strategy will serve as the framework for European health policy through 2030.1
To operationalize this expanded partnership, the Commission and WHO have scheduled a comprehensive review of all existing joint initiatives in May 2023, followed by a planning meeting in June 2023 to chart the course of their future cooperation.1
