The World Health Organization has updated its COVID-19 treatment guidelines, marking the eighth revision since the pandemic began.1 The WHO strongly recommends baricitinib for patients with severe or critical COVID-19, to be used in combination with corticosteroids.1 Additionally, sotrovimab has received a conditional recommendation for use in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who face high risk of severe disease, a category that includes older people, immunocompromised individuals, those with diabetes, hypertension, or obesity, and unvaccinated persons.1

The recommendations are grounded in evidence from seven clinical trials involving over 4,000 patients.1 In contrast, the WHO advised against ruxolitinib and tofacitinib due to uncertain efficacy.1 To support global access to these treatments, the WHO is coordinating with manufacturers to ensure adequate worldwide supply and equitable, sustainable distribution, with particular attention to low-income and middle-income countries.1
