President Trump has reversed plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist responsible for a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood military base in Texas.125 Hasan killed 13 service members and wounded 32 others in the attack,14 and was sentenced to death by military court in August 2013.4 The execution by firing squad was scheduled for December 3rd4 and would have marked the first military execution in over 60 years.1
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously announced plans for a public livestream of the execution.24 Trump announced Thursday on Truth Social that he was canceling the broadcast, stating that "many good and well-meaning people" preferred not to watch the execution and that while livestreaming might deter terrorists, he had decided against it given public sentiment.125 According to polling data, 80 percent of Americans opposed livestreaming the execution.6 The decision came after facing bipartisan opposition to the plan.37
Although the execution will proceed as scheduled, it will no longer be broadcast publicly.12 Immediate family members of victims will be permitted to witness the execution in person.12
