A research team from Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) has used artificial intelligence to reconstruct a massive geomagnetic storm that struck in September 1770, analyzing records of auroras preserved in Chinese historical documents.1 The event, designated the "Qianlong 35 Geomagnetic Storm," proved significantly more powerful than the famous Carrington Event of 1859, with intensity exceeding it by approximately 30 percent.1 The aurora boundary extended to at least magnetic latitude 20.40°N, closer to the equator than the Carrington Event's documented reach of 28.30°N.1
Led by Professor Yuan Ding from the School of Aerospace Science and Technology, the team extracted aurora observations from provincial historical records near Dongting Lake in Hunan Province and applied computational methods to quantitatively assess the storm's magnitude.1 According to historical accounts, witnesses recorded the phenomenon as follows: "In the early evening, a crimson vapor appeared in the northern corner of the city, then suddenly split into approximately one hundred beams of blue and white light, flickering and intersecting for about two hours."1 Based on these reconstructions, researchers determined that the recurrence period for such extreme geomagnetic storms is approximately 14,000 years, compared to roughly 1,400 years for Carrington-level events.1 The findings suggest this may represent the most intense geomagnetic storm documented in recorded human history.1 The research has been published in the journal Advances in Space Research.1
