China and North Korea have inaugurated a new bridge spanning the Yalu River, connecting the Chinese city of Dandong with North Korea's Sinuiju after more than a decade of postponement.12 The bridge stretches 3,026 meters and serves as a four-lane, two-way highway crossing built at a cost of approximately 2.2 billion yuan by China.2 The original main structure was completed in 2014, but the opening was indefinitely delayed due to North Korea's lagging construction of connecting roads and customs facilities.2
Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the opening ceremony and stated that the bridge will strengthen bilateral trade cooperation and facilitate people-to-people exchanges while symbolizing the friendship between the two nations.2 Li remarked that "regardless of how the international situation changes, China's Party and government's resolute position on valuing the traditional friendship with North Korea will not change."2 The bridge is expected to become a primary land trade corridor between the two countries at a time when bilateral trade reached 2.7 billion dollars last year, recovering to pre-pandemic levels.1
The bridge's opening reflects warming ties between Beijing and Pyongyang following recent developments including President Xi Jinping's June state visit to North Korea and the resumption of direct flights and passenger rail services in March.1
