Researchers at University College London have identified a previously overlooked fossil from England's Isle of Wight as belonging to a previously unknown dinosaur species, marking a significant discovery in paleontology.1 The specimen, which had been stored in a drawer for approximately a century, was originally collected by amateur paleontologist Reginald Walter Tuohy before 1924 from cliffs near the island's southwestern coast.1 Named Invictibellatrix amberina, the dinosaur dates back roughly 120 million years to the Early Cretaceous period.1
The newly identified predator measured 3 to 4 meters in length and stood about 1.5 meters tall, with claws spanning 10 to 20 centimeters.1 This carnivorous species represents the first giant dromaeosaur ever discovered in Europe12 and shares evolutionary lineage with Tyrannosaurus rex.2 According to research team leader Cassius Morrison, the dinosaur would pose a greater threat to humans than a T. rex, given that humans would weigh roughly one-third of this creature.1 Scientists employed CT scanning technology to conduct detailed analysis of the fossil.1 The findings were published in Royal Society Open Science, volume 13, issue 10 in 2026.1
