Jason Thomas, founder of CoScreen, has announced the release of Petal, a free and open-source screen sharing and pair programming tool 1. The project was developed by four members of the original CoScreen team—Jason Thomas, Till, Max, and Darren—in the two months following Datadog's decision to shut down CoScreen on July 31, 2025 1. The rapid development cycle, completed in under eight weeks, was made possible through the use of cutting-edge AI models including Fable and Astra 1.
Petal is designed to break the cycle of screen sharing tools being acquired by major corporations and subsequently discontinued 1. The tool supports multiple users sharing windows simultaneously and includes real-time cursor indicators, with current availability on macOS and Windows platforms, while a Linux version is in development 1. The software is built on LiveKit for media transmission and offers users the flexibility to choose between self-hosting or third-party video backends 1. As a fully free and open-source project, Petal will not be commercialized 1.
This release comes after CoScreen's original six-year development period before being acquired by Datadog in 2022 1.
