Australian pharmaceutical firms have donated at least A$7.7 million to the country's major political parties over the past decade, according to a new study, yet significant gaps in federal disclosure requirements obscure the true extent of these contributions.1 Research examining donations from Medicines Australia and its 37 core member companies between 2015 and 2024 revealed stark discrepancies between what enterprises reported giving and what parties reported receiving.1
Companies stated they gave the Coalition A$3.89 million, but the Coalition reported receiving only A$1.64 million, while pharmaceutical firms claimed to have donated A$3.81 million to Labor, which reported A$4.76 million in receipts.1 These inconsistencies highlight loopholes in the current political financing framework. The current disclosure threshold stands at A$12,800, set in 2015, and has gradually increased to A$16,300 as of 2024.1 However, this situation will change when new political financing disclosure laws take effect in January 2027, lowering the threshold to A$5,000 and imposing an annual donation cap of A$50,000.1
The findings emerge amid growing pharmaceutical lobbying efforts and mounting government pressure over drug pricing, with PBS pharmaceutical expenditure reaching A$19.1 billion in the 2024-25 financial year.1
