The question of Australia's first novel depends on how the distinction is defined. The first novel published within Australian territory was Quintus Servinton, issued in three volumes between 1830 and 1831 in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (present-day Tasmania).1 The author was Henry Savery, an exiled English merchant who had been sentenced to death for forgery in 1824 before being transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1825.1 The novel tells the story of a man transported to the penal colony for forging a bill of exchange.1 Savery later received a ticket of leave in 1832 and a conditional pardon in 1838, before his death at Port Arthur in 1842.1
The first novel authored by a woman in Australia was The Guardian, published in Sydney in 1838 by Anna Maria Bunn, an Irish-born woman who was only 30 years old at the time of publication.1 This authorship was not confirmed until the 1960s.1 Bunn had married English sea captain George Bunn in 1828, but after his unexpected death in 1834, she was left with significant debts.1 The novel was published by James Spilsbury, a colonial printer and publisher.1 More than a century and a half later, Australian literary scholar Elizabeth Webby reissued The Guardian with an introduction in 1991.1 While neither work achieved lasting literary prominence, both reflect the themes of early colonial literature and the cross-border character of Australian literary history.1
