Australia's emergency departments are facing mounting pressure as older patients increasingly seek urgent care, raising concerns about the healthcare system's preparedness for demographic change. Between 2019 and 2024, emergency department visits by older Australians surged by 16 percent, compared to just 4 percent growth among younger patients 1. While seniors make up 17 percent of the population, they now account for nearly one-quarter of all emergency department presentations 1.
The scale of the challenge is expected to intensify dramatically over coming decades. Emergency department visits are projected to increase by 177 percent between 2010 and 2050, with visits from those aged 65 to 84 rising by 242 percent and those aged 85 and over climbing by 411 percent 1. By 2030, one in five Australians will be aged 65 or older 1. This demographic shift has exposed critical gaps in the broader care system: over 106,000 people are on government-funded home support program waiting lists as of June 30, with actual wait numbers reaching close to 154,000 1. Last year, an average of 17 elderly Australians died daily while waiting for home care support, a figure that increased by more than one-third compared to the previous year 1.
The Australian College of Emergency Medicine has warned that governments at all levels are insufficiently prepared for the scale and complexity of population aging 1. Despite longer life expectancy representing a "modern-day success story," the multi-layered health system lacks adequate resources and coordination to serve the growing elderly population 1.
