Compromise is fundamental to the design process, representing nothing more than decision-making and the prioritization of competing interests.1 At its core, compromise involves finding balance between two rival desires, with "tradeoff" serving as an alternative term that captures the relationship between advantages and disadvantages.1
Companies that claim their products involve "no compromise" or are "compromise-free" are making an impossible assertion, as every design decision inherently requires weighing different capabilities against one another.1 Effective design, however, is not the absence of compromise but rather the deliberate exercise of judgment—selecting the right tradeoffs for a specific target audience.1 Products designed to appeal to everyone typically excel at nothing, whereas good design makes principled choices about which audiences and priorities matter most.1
