Europe's highest peak has experienced a significant reduction in elevation, with Mont Blanc dropping 1.29 metres between 2025 and 2026, falling from 4,808.76 metres to 4,807.47 metres.1 The measurement was conducted by the Haute-Savoie regional surveying team using satellite technology and drone mapping, revealing the extent of ice and snow loss across the Alpine summit.1
The recent decline is part of a longer-term pattern of altitude loss on the mountain. Since reaching its highest recorded measurement of 4,810.90 metres in 2007, Mont Blanc has declined by 3.43 metres overall.1 The peak touched its lowest level in recent years at 4,805.59 metres in 2023.1 Jean de Garrette, who leads the Haute-Savoie surveying team, described witnessing the glacier's transformation firsthand, stating: "When we climb, passing the Refuge du Goûter and the Glacier de la Brenva, we see the glacier moving upward, it is melting before our eyes, and now in some places we are crossing streams rather than glaciers."1
The melting reflects broader changes across the Alps. Swiss glaciologists have confirmed that one-fifth of Switzerland's ice has disappeared over the past five years, with an additional 5.5 per cent loss in ice volume recorded between 2025 and 2026.1 However, experts caution against directly linking year-to-year height fluctuations to climate-driven glacier acceleration. A spokesperson for the National Union of French Surveyors noted the importance of distinguishing between surface elevation changes and overall glacier volume or mass loss.1 Systematic monitoring of Mont Blanc's height has been conducted since 2001.1
