A significant portion of Europe's consumers are accumulating unused electronic devices, with minimal efforts to recycle them responsibly. According to the WEEE Forum report, 44% of European consumers own at least six fast-moving electronic products, yet over half of these individuals discard unused or broken electronics into regular waste bins rather than recycling them 1. Nearly 40% of buyers abandon or dispose of fast-moving electronics within one month of purchase 1.
This disposal pattern contributes to a growing global crisis. Approximately 62 million tonnes of electronic waste are generated worldwide annually, with projections reaching 82 million tonnes by 2030 1. The recovery rate remains dismally low—Europe achieves roughly 40% recycling efficiency, while globally only 17% of e-waste is recovered 1. This waste represents substantial lost resources: in 2022 alone, 10.7 million tonnes of European electronic waste contained one million tonnes of critical raw materials 1.
The challenges intensify as wearable medical devices expand rapidly. Sales of wearable medical electronics are projected to reach 2 billion units annually by 2050, generating an estimated one million tonnes of e-waste 1. To address this problem, the EU-funded DiCE (Digital Circular Economy) project has redesigned medical devices with modular, reusable components. Research demonstrated that reusable electrocardiogram cables reduce environmental impact by 81-94% compared to disposable alternatives 1. Pilot programs conducted in Belgium, Spain, and Slovenia revealed a dramatic shift in consumer behavior: over 60% of participants agreed to return unwanted devices when the recycling process was simplified 1.
