China and the European Union have achieved an agreement through their bilateral trade and investment consultation mechanism regarding the trade of hybrid and electric vehicles.1 The two sides have established specific import quotas and committed to addressing outstanding trade disputes through a structured framework.
Under the agreement, the EU will import 302,000 hybrid vehicles from China in 2025, with the quota set to increase by a fixed amount annually.1 Hybrid vehicle exports are expected to represent approximately one-third of China's total automotive exports to the EU in 2025.1 The negotiations, which involved over thirty rounds of talks since the second half of this year, were conducted according to three core principles: respect for facts, non-discrimination, and compliance with regulations.1
The agreement also addresses the ongoing anti-subsidy case regarding electric vehicles, with both parties committing to advance price undertakings and review procedures.1 China has reserved all of its rights under the World Trade Organization framework.1 The accord aims to ease trade tensions and provide a stable, predictable business environment for industries on both sides.
