Science Corporation has successfully implanted its PRIMA vision-restoration chip in its first patient with Stargardt disease, according to an announcement by Chief Executive Officer Max Hodak.1 The surgical procedure took place in May at the Sydney Eye Hospital in Australia.1 During initial recovery assessments, the patient was able to perceive a letter following the first examination and read an entire word at the second evaluation.1
The PRIMA chip, measuring 2 millimeters by 2 millimeters, was positioned at the back of the eye.1 Approximately 150,000 people worldwide have lost their vision due to this degenerative eye disease.1 Hodak indicated that the company is advancing development of a next-generation implant, with human trials expected to begin within one year.1 He further stated that within five years, the company aims to achieve visual clarity approaching that of normal, unimpaired vision.1 Beyond vision restoration, Science Corporation plans to apply its brain-computer interface technology to treating neurodegenerative diseases and stroke.1 The PRIMA chip has already been commercialized in Europe for patients with geographic atrophy, another retinal condition.1
