The Trump administration has required US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to step down following reports of improper conduct and ethics violations.1211 White House Press Secretary Katie Zachariah announced the decision on Tuesday, concluding Guilfoyle's tenure as ambassador in less than a year.2

The allegations center on Guilfoyle's request to Republican donor Eric Dittels to pay a $100,000 American Express credit card bill in exchange for access to government officials.211 In a Signal message, Guilfoyle wrote to Dittels: "Dear, please get this taken care of for me today."2 Dittels told multiple US media outlets that he has paid Guilfoyle approximately $300,000 over the years but received no favors in return, characterizing the request as "absolute quid pro quo."25 According to Wall Street Journal reporting, Guilfoyle also accepted improper gifts and services, made threatening statements toward Greek government officials, and used her official position to advance the interests of Greek company Aktor at official events.25

Trump stated that Guilfoyle "did well in Greece, but we didn't like what we read," indicating his dissatisfaction with the reported conduct.11 In response to the resignation demand, Guilfoyle said she would "vigorously defend my name, reputation and integrity" and denied engaging in any misconduct.11 Dittels told the BBC he ultimately did not pay Guilfoyle and claimed her request for speaking fees was a "complete lie," stating he plans to pursue legal action against her.11
