The European Union's Etias electronic travel authorization system has been postponed once again due to technical issues, leaving British travelers and other non-EU citizens unable to apply at present.1 The system, which was originally scheduled to launch this year, has been held back as problems with the Entry/Exit System (EES) remain unresolved.1 Officials have warned prospective applicants to refrain from submitting applications until the scheme is fully operational.1
When the Etias system does eventually launch, travelers will be required to pay a fee of €20 (£17), an increase from the originally planned cost of €7.1 Visitors aged 70 and above, as well as those under 18, will be exempt from paying the fee.1
The delay has created opportunities for fraudsters, with over 150 unofficial websites now operating that impersonate the legitimate Etias service.1 These fake sites pose risks of data breaches and financial scams for unwary travelers. A survey by Abta showed that awareness of European border requirements among travelers has risen from 41 percent in 2024 to 56 percent.1 The EES system has entered full operation across EU borders, though the EU has permitted border authorities to suspend enforcement penalties when queues become excessively long.1
