Scientists have used high-speed video technology to directly observe the mechanism of how honey bee stingers deliver venom for the first time.1 The research demonstrates that bee stingers operate as dual-piston pumps, featuring three main interlocking components: a central needle called a stylet that forms the primary pump chamber, and two pointed lancets at the tip that slide back and forth.1 This pumping action allows the stinger to continue injecting venom into tissue even after the bee has flown away and left the stinger behind, a phenomenon known as autotomy.1
The findings reveal a remarkable adaptation of the honeybee (Apis mellifera), whose worker bees characteristically abandon their stingers embedded in their targets after delivering a sting.1 Despite the stinger's separation from the bee's body, the dual-piston mechanism continues to function, pressing deeper into the victim's tissue and delivering additional venom.1 The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.1
