Acclaimed actor Ian McKellen will make his debut in mixed reality theatre, starring in the UK premiere of "An Ark" as a virtual projection rather than a live performer on stage.1 The production will run from March 27 to April 10, 2025, at Aviva Studios in Manchester.1 Audiences will need to wear smart glasses to view the virtual actors during the 47-minute performance.1
The work was filmed in a single session at Grenoble, France, using 52 cameras to capture four actors for the production.1 According to Factory International chief executive John McGrath, mixed reality is "when you see both the virtual elements of the experience and the real world around you."1 The production explores themes of life and death through its experimental theatrical format.
