Britain's travel industry has raised concerns that holiday demand could be declining as households face mounting financial strain. Although 2024 saw UK vacation participation reach pre-pandemic levels overall at 88%, with domestic holidays at 74% and overseas travel at 62%, nearly one-third of people plan to reduce their spending on foreign holidays next year, suggesting that peak holiday demand may have already been reached.1
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) highlighted these findings in its annual report, noting that despite challenges including the Middle East conflict, the travel sector has maintained resilience.1 However, the organization cautioned that cost pressures will persist over the coming 18 months.1 Abta's chief executive Mark Tanzer stated: "This has been a difficult year for the travel industry," and warned that "the pressure over the next 18 months will not ease".1 The travel industry contributes £57 billion annually to the British economy.1
Among travel destinations, Spain has strengthened its position in the UK outbound market, increasing its share by four percentage points to 36%.1 The Abta travel confidence index, which measures the net balance between those feeling secure about traveling abroad and those expressing concern, registered at +50.1
