Reform UK MP Robert Jenrick stated on TalkTV that if his party came to power, it would deploy the Royal Navy into the English Channel and authorize the use of lethal force against migrant boats if necessary.1 "We will deploy the Royal Navy into the English Channel. If they need to use lethal force, they will be able to," Jenrick said.1 He further claimed that such measures would resolve the issue in "just a few days."1
Party leader Nigel Farage subsequently distanced himself from Jenrick's position on LBC radio, clarifying that any use of force would be strictly defensive in nature.1 "Anyone wearing a British military uniform who is shot at has the right to respond. That's what he's saying," Farage stated.1 He additionally suggested that simply returning boats to France within two weeks would deter further crossings.1
The comments drew sharp rebuke from Defence Secretary Luke Poole, who branded the statements "abhorrent and illegal."1 "We do not shoot at unarmed civilians," Poole said.1
