Local authorities across England's eastern coast have demolished at least 183 residential properties over the past 16 years due to dangers posed by coastal erosion and landslides.1 The demolitions, concentrated in Yorkshire and East Anglia, were deemed necessary because councils judged the homes too hazardous for safe habitation.1 The total cost of these demolitions reached £1.1 million, shared among the Environment Agency, local councils, and homeowners.1
East Yorkshire Council has overseen the largest number of removals at 66 properties, while Great Yarmouth has demolished 64 homes since 2010, including 41 since December 2025.1 A spokesperson for Great Yarmouth described the scale of the crisis, noting that "last winter, beach erosion amounted to approximately 50 percent of the anticipated 30-year erosion rate, with over 10 meters of land lost within 12 months."1 Scientists have linked accelerating coastal retreat to the climate crisis, and projections indicate that by 2055, approximately 3,500 properties across England will face coastal erosion risk, rising to over 10,000 by 2105.1 Infrastructure is also threatened, with more than 6 miles of major roads, 107 miles of secondary roads, and 3.5 miles of railway at risk over the next 80 years.1
The human toll extends beyond physical displacement. Hilary Lightfoot, a victim of the crisis, expressed her loss: "I lost £650,000, which was the value of my flat."1 Compounding the difficulty, England lacks any dedicated coastal erosion insurance products, as insurers classify coastal retreat as a "virtual certainty" rather than an insurable accident.1
