Following the Chinese Communist Party's established practice of attaching significance to major anniversaries in five- and ten-year increments, General Secretary Xi Jinping is expected to attend the commemoration ceremony, continuing a tradition observed by previous leaders 1. Xi previously visited Tangshan on July 28, 2016, during the earthquake's 40th anniversary 1. Former leader Hu Jintao visited the city in July 2006 for the 30th anniversary, paying respects with a wreath 1, while former leader Jiang Zemin made a special visit to Tangshan in 1996 for the 20th anniversary 1.
The original earthquake on July 28, 1976, registered magnitude 7.8 and resulted in 242,000 deaths and more than 164,000 people severely injured 1.
