The European Union announced on October 12 a new round of sanctions targeting Russia, adding 1,569 individuals and entities to its sanctions list, including 826 companies and 743 company officials associated with them.1 The measures, which represent the largest single batch of sanctions in EU history, are primarily aimed at mid-sized suppliers within Russia's military-industrial complex, including providers of electronic products, communications equipment, aviation components, satellite systems, and missile technology.1
The sanctioned individuals and companies will face asset freezes, restrictions on financial transactions, and entry bans to the European Union.1 Since February 2022, the EU has cumulatively sanctioned nearly 4,600 Russian individuals and entities as part of its ongoing response to Russia's actions.1
Russia rejected the measures, dismissing them as "illegal restrictions, political extortion, and neo-colonial practices," and claimed that the EU's objective of inflicting a "strategic defeat" on Russia would not succeed.1
