The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine has released a report highlighting significant gaps in Australia's healthcare preparedness for demographic aging.1 In the 2023–2024 fiscal year, approximately one-quarter of emergency department visits involved patients aged 65 and older, with nearly 9 million emergency presentations overall.1 Among these elderly patients, over 53,510 waited longer than 24 hours for hospital admission from the emergency department, representing an increase of nearly 40,000 compared to the 2018–2019 period.1
The disparity in care is evident when examining admission timelines: only 54 percent of elderly patients requiring hospitalization were transferred to a hospital ward within 8 hours of arriving at the emergency department, significantly lower than the 71 percent rate for younger patients.1 The report indicates that Australia's existing medical infrastructure and workforce are insufficient to manage the projected demographic shift, with nearly one-fifth of the Australian population expected to reach age 65 by 2030.1 Peter Allely, chair of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, stated that Australia's healthcare system has yet to adequately prepare for the challenges posed by population aging.1
