Former Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has pledged to persist in championing an increase to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), even after Liberal Party leader Angus Taylor swiftly rejected the proposal.1 In his remarks, Frydenberg stated that he is "not troubled" by the rejection, emphasizing that "serious economists who study these issues from an evidence-based perspective say this is a debate we need to have."1 His GST proposal, outlined in his forthcoming book "A Grateful Son," calls for a "thoughtful but ambitious national debate" that would raise the GST while eliminating certain exemptions, with additional revenue directed toward substantial income tax cuts.1
Taylor's response was unequivocal, declaring: "We will not increase the GST in a cost of living crisis. We will not do it."1 Frydenberg also issued a warning to the Liberal Party, cautioning that the party has historically been "most powerful as a 'broad church' accommodating the different values of conservatives and small-l liberals," describing this inclusivity as "the enduring strength that distinguishes us from the other side."1
Regarding his political future, Frydenberg indicated he will announce in early next year whether he will contest the next federal election, which is anticipated to occur in early 2028.1 This decision would represent his attempt to reclaim the Kooyong seat he lost in 2022.1
