In 1980, animator Hayao Miyazaki proposed adapting the American comic Rowlf into a theatrical feature film targeting the U.S. market, viewing it as his second feature project 1. Miyazaki was drawn to the work's unique aesthetic, describing it as "a world that appears at first to be grotesque and ironic is actually filled with faith in a healthy life" 1. In his proposal, he wrote: "I think that Rowlf would be ideal for a theatrical feature film targeting the American market" 1. Working alongside artist Yoshifumi Kondo, he developed concept designs for the adaptation 1.
However, the project stalled when original creator Richard Corben declined to grant permission 1. According to Corben, his decision stemmed from the fact that "Miyazaki-san's sketches were significantly different from his own drawings" 1. The initiative was ultimately abandoned in 1982 1.
Rather than discarding his creative efforts, Miyazaki repurposed the character and thematic material developed during the Rowlf project. A character named Maria, created during this aborted adaptation, evolved into Nausicaä 1. These elements eventually crystallized in Miyazaki's manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, launched in 1982, which culminated in the acclaimed 1984 film adaptation 1. This cinematic release established Miyazaki as an iconic figure in Japanese animation 1.
