The BBC has defended its decision to edit out a trans rights message from a T-shirt worn by Strictly Come Dancing contestant Bethany Antonia.1 The garment, designed by Conner Ives and bearing the slogan "Protect the Dolls," was clearly visible in social media preview videos but was digitally altered to plain white in the Saturday broadcast and iPlayer rehearsal footage.1
A BBC spokesperson stated that the editing followed standard editorial practice across entertainment programming, saying: "As is standard practice on any entertainment show on the BBC and in line with our editorial guidelines, appropriate steps are taken to reduce the inclusion of any overt branding or slogans that may be present, regardless of the wording or statement in question."1 The corporation noted it has previously applied similar edits to clothing carrying political or other messaging, citing a 2017 instance when it obscured a T-shirt worn by Clean Bandit's Grace Chatto expressing support for Jeremy Corbyn, and a 2024 case where text reading "Trans Rights Are Human Rights" on Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson's shirt was blurred on Michael McIntyre's Big Show.1
