Daisy Dent, an ecologist at ETH Zurich, has revealed how animal-plant interaction networks enable tropical rainforests to naturally regenerate without human intervention.1 Through analysis of forest plots in Panama's Barro Colorado Nature Reserve—records stretching back to the nineteenth century—Dent's research demonstrates that naturally regenerating secondary forests absorb carbon at eleven times the rate of old-growth forests annually.1 This finding challenges the effectiveness of large-scale monoculture tree-planting carbon offset schemes.
The research shows that fruit-eating animals are responsible for establishing over seventy percent of tropical rainforest tree species.1 According to Dent, "tropical rainforests are supported by massive networks of interactions—including interactions between fungi that help trees absorb nutrients, pollinators, and seed dispersers."1 A 2024 study found that forest plots with only thirty-five percent canopy coverage can recover to full forest status.1 Globally, approximately 2.15 billion hectares of forest—an area larger than Mexico—could naturally regenerate.1 In Brazil alone, millions of hectares of rainforest are already undergoing natural recovery.1
Tropical rainforests store forty percent of the world's terrestrial carbon.1 Dent's research suggests that protecting and enabling natural regeneration processes may be more effective for carbon sequestration than conventional reforestation approaches relying on human planting efforts.
