British-German human rights lawyer Philippe Sands received the German Book Prize for Peace at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 12, 2026, as the event concluded.1 Sands, a law professor at University College London, was recognized as "a humanitarian whose commitment to human rights, justice, and mutual understanding remains unshakeable despite growing resistance."1
In his acceptance remarks, Sands criticized Germany's silence on Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank, asserting that human rights violations must be explicitly identified.1 He stated: "This is not antisemitism. This is not anti-Israel. This is fact."1 At the same time, Sands condemned the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack as "abhorrent" and a "monstrous crime against the norms of international law."1 The award committee noted that his work is grounded in "a commitment to the universal rights of every human being."1
Sands is the author of East West Street, published in 2016, which appeared in Germany in 2018 under the title Return to Lviv.1
