The Australian Broadcasting Corporation may pursue disciplinary measures against journalist Michael Slezak following publication of an opinion article he wrote for the Australian Financial Review, according to the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA).1 Slezak, who serves as federal president of the MEAA, authored the piece addressing concerns about a proposal from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission that would restrict journalists' access to personal information about company directors.1
ABC News Director Simon Robinson and Head of Digital and National News Lee Grendening called Slezak to discuss the broadcaster's external work policy in connection with the article.1 The MEAA claims that management has refused to rule out disciplinary action, including termination.1 The union characterizes the potential measures as an attack on press freedom and workers' rights.1 In response, 197 ABC union members have signed an open letter opposing any disciplinary action against Slezak.1 Union members are scheduled to hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss a collective response to the situation.1
