A fourth-century Roman fort unearthed in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has confirmed details from medieval Welsh legend about an imperial military installation in the region.1 Oxford University Roman historian Mark Merorni identified the fortification approximately 2 miles southwest of Frenni Fawr peak, with excavations yielding two late fourth-century coins, pottery fragments, numerous Roman roof tiles, iron styluses, and wheel ruts that substantiate the site's Roman occupation.1
The fort measures 180 by 150 meters and is estimated to have accommodated roughly 500 soldiers.1 Its layout displays the characteristic "playing card" shape typical of Roman military camps, featuring rounded corners, a rectangular headquarters structure at the center, and a larger rectangular commander's residence on the southern side.1 According to medieval Welsh tradition documented in the Mabinogion, Roman emperor Magnus Maximus established a camp near Frenni Fawr; the archaeological evidence now supports this historical account.1 The discovery was made in 2024.1
