Former students of Saviour Baptist School in western Sydney have alleged serious safeguarding failures at the private religious institution, according to testimony before a New South Wales parliamentary inquiry committee.1 The allegations include students being compelled to share beds with teachers during school camping trips to save space, and a principal exposing himself in public areas of the campus.1
Edward Garth, 23, a former student, told the inquiry that he fled the Saviour community in November and subsequently faced exclusion.1 He reported witnessing Principal Jonathon Cannon emerging naked from a bathroom.1 Another former student, Emma Hughes, corroborated accounts of bed-sharing during school excursions and described a culture of boundary violations at the school, where staff used familial terms such as "uncle" and inappropriately discussed students' personal matters.1
The inquiry also heard of a humiliating public incident in which two students were ridiculed in front of their entire seventh-grade class after a confiscated love letter between them was read aloud and criticized by school representative Noel Cannon.1 Despite these concerns, authorities and the community have received 15 notifications of serious risk of harm since 2004, yet none triggered an on-site assessment.1 Parliamentary inquiry committee chair Abigail Boyd expressed disappointment at the absence of school representatives from the hearing.1
