A 17-member research team organized jointly by Purdue University and the Archaeological Heritage Institute has traveled to Nikumaroro Island in Kiribati in the central Pacific to investigate the disappearance of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.1 The expedition aims to determine whether an unidentified object visible in satellite imagery since 1938, known as the Taraia object, may be wreckage from Earhart's aircraft that vanished in 1937.1
Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared in 1937 after departing from Lae, New Guinea, en route to Howland Island.1 The research team plans to conduct remote sensing surveys using magnetometers and sonar to examine the object, with plans for comprehensive excavation beginning next year pending approval from the Kiribati government.1
Previous discoveries on Nikumaroro Island, including cosmetic jars, aircraft-related materials, and shoe fragments, have sustained decades of academic debate about Earhart's fate.1 Human remains discovered on the atoll in 1940 remain a focal point of scholarly contention.1 However, rival researcher Rick Gillespie has suggested the Taraia object is merely a tree deposited by tidal action rather than aircraft wreckage.1 The expedition team is scheduled to return to Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati, by month's end.1
