A spotted seal named Nana, a Class I protected animal in China, has become the center of a complex debate over wildlife conservation after returning on her own to her previous location following a forced relocation. 1 The incident highlights the tension between protecting endangered species and respecting their natural behaviors in an increasingly human-dominated environment.
Nana's journey began in the summer of 2024 when the young seal drifted off course during migration, traveling from the Bohai Sea to Beihai in Guangxi province, where she was rescued after sustaining injuries. 1 After rehabilitation, she was transported back to Dalian on November 25, 2025, and released on April 16, 2026, at Sanshan Island alongside two other young seals named Chu Ba and Dan Jiu. 1 However, instead of following the normal deep-sea migration route, Nana remained in shallow waters in the northern Yellow Sea before eventually arriving at Dajingshan Island's Golden Coast in June. 1
On September 7, 2026, local authorities in Changhai County relocated Nana to Haiyang Island, over 60 kilometers away. 1 Six days later, on the night of September 13, the seal independently returned to the Golden Coast, covering a direct distance of approximately 140 kilometers and an actual swimming distance exceeding 200 kilometers. 1 According to Tian Jiashen, director of the Marine Science Institute, "The fact that it can swim over 200 kilometers in six days and return shows its wild survival ability is completely intact." 1 Following her return, authorities announced no further relocations would occur in the near term, while instances of feeding and touching the seal noticeably decreased. 1 On September 25, a dedicated "Nana shuttle service" was launched, and merchandise featuring the seal was introduced in October. 1
The case of Nana mirrors concerns raised by another spotted seal in Hainan named Anon, who was fed and observed by crowds for 15 months before being transferred to a rescue center in September 2025, where health examinations revealed diarrhea, abnormal liver function and cardiac enzyme levels, and ultraviolet sun damage to the skin. 1
