Over five years of construction, the Sichuan section of the Giant Panda National Park has achieved significant conservation results. Wild giant panda numbers in eight key monitoring regions increased by 7.3%, while habitat connectivity improved substantially 1. The protection efforts have also generated spillover benefits for other endangered species, with snow leopards and golden snub-nosed monkeys showing population recovery 1.
The conservation initiative has required substantial investment and infrastructure development. Sichuan has invested a cumulative 2.886 billion yuan over the five-year period, established or upgraded 82 protection stations, and installed 3,646 boundary markers 1. Habitat restoration efforts have covered more than 340,000 acres 1. To support real-time monitoring, 930 infrared cameras have been integrated into the national park's observation system 1. Additionally, seven critical ecological corridors have captured over 150 instances of wild giant panda activity through camera traps 1.
Scientific discovery and public engagement have expanded alongside conservation work. Researchers collaborating with more than 40 institutions including the Chinese Academy of Sciences have conducted nearly 300 joint research projects, yielding discoveries of 14 new plant species and 2 new amphibian and reptile species 1. The park attracts an average of over 3 million visitors annually for ecological experiences 1.
