A joint investigation by BBC Panorama and authorities has uncovered allegations that Deloitte, the world's largest accounting firm, assisted Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in forging documents to conceal his assets and evade taxes.1 According to the inquiry, Deloitte's Cyprus office orchestrated the removal of approximately $672 million in assets—including a $147.5 million superyacht named Pelorus, luxury properties, and private aircraft—from Abramovich's corporate accounts.1 The investigation alleges that documents dated 2003 were falsified in 2006 when Deloitte signed off on the accounts, with email evidence from August 2005 suggesting the firm's involvement in the scheme.1
Two investment companies, Kravin and Electus, which appear connected to Abramovich, held assets valued at approximately $2 billion and $10 billion respectively, according to the findings.1 Legal expert Andrew Mitchell KC characterized the allegations as "straightforward" tax fraud.1 Abramovich's legal representatives have denied the accusations.1 The investigation carries added significance given that Abramovich faced British sanctions following the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Jersey authorities froze £5.4 billion in assets as part of a criminal investigation spanning four years.1 Cyprus parliamentary member Christos Christofides stated that any evaded taxes would need to be recovered if the allegations prove substantiated.1
